Alright, so I've been getting a little crafty lately, thanks threadbanger.com. I did my first real project tonight. I have a sleep mask that helps when it is sunny out or when I have a headache.
It is pretty old and was cheap to begin with, so I decided to make a new one. Here is how I did it.
It is pretty old and was cheap to begin with, so I decided to make a new one. Here is how I did it.
So, here is my sad stretched out mask. :(
I begin by tracing it out on to some news paper to create a pattern.
Then, I trace it on to my fabric. I am using a t-shirt scrap from when I was experimenting a few days ago. That will be one side, and an old sweater sleeve will be the other side.
I had some satin-like fabric from a project I never got around to. This will be for the strap that holds the mask on my head. I measured around my head, and added two inches - this is where my first mark will be.
My second mark will be three inches up so that I can sew both edges together.
Little Man insisted on helping. Well, really he is just needy.
Sorry about the blurry picture. This is the strap finished. I thought some royal blue would look good against the black. I need to work on my straight lines. :)
OK, so here are my three basic parts: the outside, the strap and my old mask that I will use to stuff the middle. I am ready to put it together.
I've pinned the outside. In order to avoid as much hand sewing as possible (as I am worse at that than I am at straight lines) I stuffed the strap into the outsides. I made sure to keep it straight and away from where I am going to sew, other than where it needs to be attached.
So, I've finished sewing, and I've left some of it open so I can turn it right side out and stuff.
I cut the excess straps off...
...turned it right side out and then stuffed the old mask in.
Voila! Not too bad for my first project ever. I still need a lot of practice, but this piece will be functional until I can manage a better one.
